Looking for green spaces and views in Södermalm? Here are four parks that locals keep coming back to, perfect for picnics, evening sun and walks along the water in 2026.
Södermalm is one of Stockholm’s most vibrant neighbourhoods. You feel it in the streets, in the cafés and in how people move through the area. But what many people do not expect before moving here is just how green the neighbourhood actually is. Rocky hillsides, allotment gardens, viewpoints and large park areas mean that living in Södermalm always puts nature within reach.
Many who rent an apartment in Södermalm highlight the proximity to green spaces and water as one of the biggest advantages of the neighbourhood.
Here are the four parks we always recommend first.
Vitabergsparken
Vitabergsparken sits up on Södermalm’s hillside, just below Sofia Church, and is perhaps the park that best captures the character of the neighbourhood. The rolling terrain, the old red cottages, the views and the easy atmosphere are Södermalm in a nutshell.
The park is hilly and spacious, with large lawns that fill up with picnic blankets the moment the sun comes out. Parkteatern puts on free outdoor performances during the summer months and Vitabergskafét serves coffee and ice cream in a setting that is hard to beat.
Our recommendation is to make your way up to the hill by Sofia Church and settle onto the grass on a late afternoon. The view from up here is one that stays with you, and the evening sun falls beautifully across the rooftops to the south from around six in the evening during summer.
It is a place that expats and newcomers tend to discover early and keep returning to.
Nearest metro: Medborgarplatsen or Skanstull
Tantolunden
Tantolunden by Hornstull is Södermalm’s answer to a proper neighbourhood park. Large and leafy, it is dominated by old trees, generous walking paths and one of Stockholm’s most charming park landscapes, with allotment gardens climbing the hillside.
The park stretches down to Årstaviken and at the water’s edge sits Tantobadet, a swimming spot with docks and diving platforms that draws visitors throughout the summer. There is also a minigolf course and a viewpoint at the top of the hill with sweeping views on a clear day.
What makes Tantolunden particularly special is the evening light. The park faces west and during the summer months you can sit on the grass long after the rest of the city has fallen into shade. Between seven and nine in the evening it is one of the most pleasant places in all of Stockholm to simply sit and do nothing.
We usually recommend bringing food, finding a spot down by the water and then walking up through the allotment gardens as the sun starts to drop. It is the kind of evening that is difficult to forget.

Skinnarviksberget
Skinnarviksberget is not a park in the traditional sense. It is a rocky hilltop. But it is one of the most talked-about spots in Södermalm, and for good reason. At 53 metres above sea level it is Stockholm’s highest natural point, with views across Riddarfjärden, the City Hall, Gamla stan and large parts of the inner city.
In summer the rocks fill with picnic blankets, guitars and conversations in the evening sun. It draws everyone, the Södermalm local with a morning coffee, the visitor with a camera and the recently arrived expat trying to understand Stockholm from a different angle.
There are no benches up here, so bring a cushion. But make the effort to go. We tend to say that watching the sun go down from Skinnarviksberget is one of those experiences you should have had if you live in Södermalm. It is our favourite viewpoint in the whole neighbourhood.
Nearest metro: Hornstull, then a short walk up through Skinnarviksparken
Mariatorget
Mariatorget is technically a square, but it functions as a park and is used in exactly the same way. Centrally located in Södermalm and surrounded by cafés, restaurants and well-stocked shops, it is a natural gathering point for everyone who lives in the area.
The fountain at its centre, Thor’s Fishing, is one of Stockholm’s more iconic sculptures. Around it, people settle onto the benches at lunchtime, after work and at weekends. It is not a large space, but it is a lively one.
What makes Mariatorget more than just a square is everything around it. The whole neighbourhood is dense and pleasant, with a range of places to eat and drink that make it easy to spend an entire day in the area without needing to go anywhere else.
For anyone looking for a rental apartment in Södermalm who values an active neighbourhood with everything within walking distance, Mariatorget is a strong argument in the area’s favour.

Why So Many People Choose to Live in Södermalm
Södermalm is one of Stockholm’s most sought-after neighbourhoods and has long attracted a varied mix of residents. Creative professionals, young families, international expats and companies looking for a well-located corporate apartment all find their way here.
It comes down to a combination that is difficult to find elsewhere: a central location, a strong neighbourhood character, plenty of green space and a restaurant and cultural scene that never really switches off. Living close to parks and water in Södermalm is not the exception but rather a given for anyone who picks the right address.
When people ask us what makes Södermalm special, the answer is usually the whole picture. The fact that Tantolunden, Skinnarviksberget and Vitabergsparken are all within walking distance of the same apartment is not a bad place to start.
